Four Inexpensive Ways To Unclog A Shower Drain

We will all have to deal with the problem of a clogged shower drain at some point. Most of us just want to call the plumber but in truth, it is something we could easily fix and save a few bucks.

The most common thing that causes this is human hair.

You Can Do it Yourself

Use a Hand snake

Start by removing the cover to the drain. Position a hand snake at the shower drain's mouth. Use your hands to work the snake into the drain and only stop when you get some resistance. Turn the handle of the tool in the opposite direction to the one you used initially. The mass of hair that caused the clogging will come up and can then be collected by hand from the end of the snake. Read also about Clogged shower drain here.

Baking Soda and Vinegar Method

Mix baking soda and vinegar in the ratio of 1:1, so that you have a 2/3 full cup of the contents. Fizzing will happen immediately. Quickly pour the content into the blocked drain and wait for 1 hour or more. Then pour boiling water down the drain. This should remove any hair or grime down there.

Alternatively, put a substantial amount of the baking soda down the drain and then pour vinegar. This works just as well, expect you will use more of the chemicals.

Use Hot Water

Hot water can also be used to clear up a clogged shower drain. Boil 2-4 cups of water. Pour the boiling liquid down the drain. The hot water will effectively remove the clog.

Use Some Caustic Soda

Obtain some Sodium Hydroxide. This chemical can cause serious burns. To keep yourself safe, use rubber gloves and keep your eyes protected during the process.

Add 3 cups of the chemical into a gallon that is  3/4  full. Transfer the contents into a bucket and use a stick or some other wooden object to stir the contents into a well mixed up solution. After the solution fizzes and starts to heat up, pour it into the drain and let it stand for about 30 minutes. Finally, flush the drain with some hot water. That should solve the problem.
